Moving with your children after a divorce

A move that changes the parenting schedule needs agreement or court approval first.

Before you move

If you share parenting time and a move would substantially change the other parent's time, you generally need either the other parent's written agreement or a court order before you move. Moving first and asking later can seriously damage your case.

What courts look at

The court focuses on the children's best interests: the reasons for the move, the relationship with each parent, schooling, and whether a workable long-distance schedule is possible.

If the other parent wants to move
